The first thing you should check for in this case is your connection speed. In order to do this, navigate to speedtest.net and click the go button to begin running a speed test for your device. After around 60 seconds, the speed test will present you with your devices results.

Your results will be presented in three stats which are all related to your internet connection speed:

• Ping – also known as latency stands for the number of milliseconds it takes for you to receive a response after sending a request to a server. The lower this number then the faster your connection is to that server. This is extremely important when playing online video games as high ping results will cause the game to lag.
• Download speed – is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and is how fast your computer can retrieve data from remote servers. The higher your download speed then the quicker you will be able to browse the internet, download files and stream videos.
• Upload speed – is also measured in Mbps and is how fast your computer can send data to other devices on the internet. The faster upload speed then the quicker you can perform tasks such as uploading files to a website. This number is usually less than the download speed since most online activity revolves around downloads.

If one program is heavily using the network then other applications will suffer, so when experiencing slow network speeds check to see what apps are using your network connection and close them down if necessary.

To do this, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager then click more details to expand the window if required. Within the Processes tab click the Network header to sort running apps by their network usage.

If any unnecessary program is using excessive bandwidth then you should close it down in order to free up resources for the applications, you require. This is especially important if you want to perform a network-intensive activity like playing online games or video streaming.

Microsoft recently advised users that there may be some issues with the upcoming update for Windows 10. According to Microsoft, the update may be blocked by your device prior to completion due to “inappropriate drive reassignment” which is caused by having external USB devices or SD cards attached at the time of running the update. This issue has the potential to affect lots of people however do not panic just yet, as Microsoft has released some safety rules which you can follow prior to initiating the update.

1.  Create a single test case. Before you start changing your entire environment, take a breath, select one computer, run the update, and see what happens. You can troubleshoot any issues from there, which will pay the experience forward so the remaining upgrades go smoother.

2.  Look at the calendar. Old machines and new software are less likely to play nicely together. If your PC is older than three years old, consider updating to a new machine with new software already installed. You’re in a better position for a successful update if you purchased a new PC more recently.

3. Back up to move forward.Backing up your all your data – including files, apps and systems – is the only foolproof method of avoiding any data loss. Your data will be safe from Microsoft updates, natural disasters, hardware failure or human error. Unexpected crashes could damage or delete your computer files, so it’s important to be proactive especially before you upgrade any software.

NOTE: If you’re specifically upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10, you’re at higher risk for problems. That’s because the Windows 10 update requires adoption of a completely new system, so the installation can wipe out your existing user data and all of your system preferences. Backing up before you update is critically important to minimize your risk of downtime.

6. Live by the 3-2-1 Backup Rule.  This essential rule will save you a lot of heartache by fool-proofing your backup plan: Create three copies of your data, store copies on at least two types of storage media, and ensure one of these copies is stored off-site (e.g. in the cloud).

7. Keep older backups just in case. Much like you should keep copies of your tax returns for a few years after you file, it’s important to keep older backups. These copies ensure an extra layer of defense against any data loss and, if you’re backing up business files, they can even help you comply with legal or industry requirements.

Microsoft’s heads-up about complications with the May 2019 Update is helpful to inform users of potential problems, but its up to users to be proactive in their cyber protection strategy.
