Australian based Cyanweb Solutions taken down in online attack

What happened to Cyanweb Solutions?
Cyanweb Solutions is a Perth-based company which provides web and IT based services. On the 27th June 2018 Cyanweb Solutions experienced a serious data terrorist attack where 88% of client data stored on a cPanel administrative server was deleted.

As a company that not only designs websites but acts as an in-house IT department and online marketing advisor to its business customers, the attack’s speed and sophistication is a genuine  reminder that even the savviest of technology companies are at risk.

The Cyanweb Solutions attack is not the only attack affecting businesses. According to NBC’s Today Show, Microsoft’s cloud services are targeted by 167 malware attacks, 4,000 ransomware attacks and 30 million fraudulent login attempts daily. The continuous bombardment and the 24-hour news cycle’s reporting can create a sense of helplessness.

What You Can Do To Protect Yourself?

Well in a similar way like you lock your doors of your home to protect yourself from being robbed you can protect your data with a few proactive measures.

  • Update your operating systems and software:

Hackers will often scan your operating system and software looking for vulnerabilities. While installing software updates takes time and feels like a burden this process is your way to fix the broken lock. The Equifax breach that leaked the personal information of 145 million people occurred because a single employee forgot to update their web application development framework software to the most current version.

  • Keep a Backup:

It is very important to regularly backup your data as this will prevent data loss should something go wrong. It is far better to make a full image backup as this captures the current operating system along all software, applications, files and system settings.

  • Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date:

Your anti-virus software is designed to protect you from threats and attacks on your data so it is very important to keep your anti-virus up-to-date.

  • Understand how malware gets onto your computer:

Some of the different ways in which malware can get into your computer are via attachments within a mail or visiting malicious websites that download malware to any machine that visits them. Connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi networks pose a threat because hackers can insert malware into your computer as the information travels between your device and the router. It is important to remember that avoiding these attack vectors can help minimize the chance you’ll get infected.

Conclusion

Whether you’re concerned about data theft or data destruction, protecting your systems against threats means staying ahead of attackers. If you follow the measures described above, then you have a good chance of protecting your data from threats and attacks.
